It’s fitting this post is going live while I’m vacationing in Seattle, land of the Rainier cherry. While I adore all summer fruits, it’s cherries – be it sweet, tart or sour - that are what I can’t get enough of all summer long.
Admittedly, I don’t often cook with cherries because I usually polish them off before I can even get them into a measuring cup or a baking pan.
Cherries remind me of the beach as they are almost always in the cooler accompanying us with the beach chairs, towels, umbrellas and sand toys. Our family tradition is to see how far we can spit the pits and my Dad always makes a smile with four to five cherry pit “teeth”, artfully arranged in his mouth.
And it’s how my daughter – 5 years old at the time – lost her first tooth. Literally lost it in the sand as she was practicing the fine art of cherry pit spitting for the first time.
And when cleaning out some files the other day, I came across this now defunct food magazine and figured it was a sign I had to give some cherry desserts the spotlight.
(Is 1987 considered vintage at this point??)
So, here are 10 delectable cherry dessert recipes from the Healthy Aperture archives to enjoy during summer’s last hurrah.
I think I’ll buy a few extra bags of cherries to help my odds of actually cooking with them next time.
