A great cook book for anyone, especially moms of babes, goes great with a warm batch of featured Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins.
I may not know a lot about reviewing cook books, but I’m blessed to have gone through one healthy pregnancy. Loving everything baby, mama and parenting-related I was thrilled to have the opportunity to take a look at The Natural Pregnancy Cookbook from Dr. Sonali Ruder (The Foodie Physician). I did receive a copy of the Natural Pregnancy Cookbook, but the opinions and statements are all my own!
All three stages of pregnancy can be a struggle. I’m not talking about the trimesters here! Pre-pregnancy, pregnancy and post-pregnancy prove that motherhood has its challenges. Luckily I had the one-up in the nutrition department, being a dietitian. My fellow motherly friends were always asking about their diet or asking me to check out a a recipe to make sure it was “good for the baby” or if it would help with this or that ailment. Finally, I can point them to this Natural Pregnancy Cookbook as a resource for their pregnancy related diet needs.
The book starts out with a great overview of nutrition recommendations for pregnancy (kind of like a mini nutrition lesson for mamas-to-be). Recipes are organized by category and each one has a nutritional analysis which includes folate and iron (above and beyond what traditional analysis include) which are very important during pregnancy.
Recipes average 8-10 ingredients, with easy to follow directions, perfect for the sleep deprived and even the busiest moms. I’ll admit, if I see a recipe and it has more than 10 ingredients, I wimp out and opt for an easier one. Surprisingly, the recipe that caught my eye was the “Pump Up Your Milk” Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins that was featured from the Full Belly Sisters. I challenged myself with 16 ingredients, in the name of breastfeeding promotion!
The muffins turned out great and I can’t wait to whip up a batch when it comes time for baby number two. In the meantime.... me, my family, the band and coworkers will be enjoying many of the yummy recipes the Natural Pregnancy Cookbook has to offer!
