6 Ingredient Cinnamon Twist Bread

Bake up a loaf of this cinnamony sweet twisted bread with just 6 simple ingredients.

~by Regan Jones, RD

There's a running {sad} joke around my house:

"This chicken is chewy."

Okay, well actually it's not so much a joke as it is the absolute reality of many of my chicken-based dinners. Before you start feeling sorry for me (and wondering why you keep coming to my food blog if I'm admitting I sorta suck at chicken cooking), you should know that it's always followed up with:

"But you're the BEST baker in the world, mom."

I've got a plan in place to work on my chicken woes. I won't bore you with that now. Because, well, I've got this:

Give me some butter, flour, sugar and a little yeast and I'll give you something worth waking up for.

You already know my propensity to turn a loaf of bread machine dough into sweet rolls:

But what you may not know is that same dough strategy can yield a fun twist - literally - when made into a loaf of bread.

Making this twisted bread is SO much easier than you'd think. It may look complicated, like you need some serious baking skills.

Spoiler: You don't.

You can totally make this with a 1-pound loaf of fresh pizza dough or bread dough (Bridgford has this one I've been using FOR YEARS.) The technique to yield the swirl is nothing more than rolling up a rectangle, braiding the ends over each other, twisting and cutting the top slightly to allow a little of that cinnamon-sugar mixture to burst out the top.

A chicken dish could never do all that.

6 Ingredient Cinnamon Twist Bread

Yield

Makes 1 loaf (8 servings)

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pound bread dough (I use either my Bread Machine Cinnamon Roll Dough* OR frozen Bridgford Ready-Dough**, thawed)
  • 4 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cream, half-n-half, milk or orange juice

Directions

  1. Combine brown sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Coat a loaf pan with cooking spray; set aside.
  2. Place dough on a lightly floured surface. Roll into a 24- x 4-inch rectangle, sprinkling with additional flour if needed to avoid sticking to rolling pin.
  3. Spread butter over dough. Sprinkle with brown sugar mixture. Gently roll up dough, jelly-roll fashion, starting with a long end. Pinch seam to seal.
  4. Starting in the center of dough, began twisting one length of dough over the other as if braiding bread. Make at least 4 overlapping braids. Then twist braid a few more times.
  5. Place twisted loaf in prepared pan. Carefully use a knife or scissors to slice a long shallow cut along the top of the bread. Cover and let rise 45 minutes.
  6. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  7. Uncover dough and bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool in pan 10 minutes. Combine powdered sugar and cream. Remove bread from pan and drizzle with icing.
