Here we are, right in the middle of February. Did you know it also happens to be Heart Health Month? Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States so it definitely deserves a month in the spotlight.
As a Registered Dietitian, I love sharing how food can positively impact our health so I thought this week would be the perfect time to spotlight one of my favorite heart-healthy foods: salmon!
We eat salmon about once a week in our house. It's one of my favorite proteins. Not only is it quick and easy to prepare, it's also packed with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Literally thousands of studies show the health benefits of omega-3s (specifically EPA and DHA), including maintaining healthy blood pressure, supporting healthy triglyceride levels and overall just managing your risk for heart disease.
When it comes to how easy it is to get those omega-3s, salmon tops the list! Most salmon dishes can be prepared in 20 minutes or less, which makes them perfect for a busy night. I rounded up some easy heart-healthy salmon recipes for you to try over the next few weeks!

For those of you who don't like salmon or don't eat enough of it, keep in mind it's still important to include plenty of omega-3s in your diet for optimum heart health. While choosing fatty fish twice a week is the best place to start, omega-3 supplementation -- either through fortified foods or through supplements -- is also a healthy option.
In fact, I've recently started taking an omega-3 supplement each day. Even though I eat salmon regularly, I learned through testing that omega-3 levels in my blood aren't as high as they should be for optimum heart health (The omega-3 test I took was provided to me free of charge by DSM Nutritional Products.) If you want to know more about why omega-3s are important and what your options are to ensure you're consuming enough each day, check out this video by my colleagues at the Global Organization for EPA and DHA. ~Regan
